Pediatric Heart Surgeries

Pediatric Heart Disease

  • Heart disease as #1 killer in the world.
  • Over the past 30 years, while Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) rates in most developed countries declined by 50%, in India, it has increased tremendously.
  • India is now in the middle of a CAD epidemic with over 10% of urban Indians having Heart Disease a rate similar to overseas Indians.
  • CAD is highly predictable, preventable and treatable. Over 1.6 million Indians needcritical heart surgeryannually. Currently about 65,000 surgeriesare done, largely because therest cannot afford it.
  • More than 1,60,000 childrenare born annually with congenital heart disease. Only about 6,000 manage to get treated mostly with sponsorships and government aid.

The Needy Poor Patients

  • While many of us can rejoice that most modern Cardiac facilities at international competitive rates are available now in India, it is out of reach of 90% of the population in the country – particularly the weaker sections of the society.
  • Heart Surgery is one of the most expensive operations. Most of the rural poor cannot afford such costly operations.

Rotary’s Involvement in Cardiac surgeries for the Needy Poor:

  • Rotary Banalore West in association with participating hospotals is committed to providing heart surgeries at affordable cost for the needy poor. It now has MOUs with Cardiac Hospitals like Jayadeva, Fortis, Manipal, Narayana, and Columbia Asia to conduct such surgeries at highly subsidized rates.
